The picturesque resort town of Altea is located in the Marina Baja region, on the Mediterranean coast of the Gulf of Altea, south of Calpe and north of Alfaz del Pi. The long Sierra Bernia mountain range separates Calpe from Altea.
The town is part of the Douzelage, the European Union’s sister city association, and is the official cultural capital of the Valencian Community. Very peaceful and welcoming, Altea has always attracted bright and creative people, and in the mid-20th century, a whole colony of artists, writers, and musicians transformed the town into a bohemian haven.
There are numerous art galleries and artisan workshops specializing in ceramics and jewelry. And at its cultural center, the Palau de Altea, where Montserrat Caballé and Rostropovich performed, concerts by major orchestras and opera and pop stars from around the world are programmed, as well as exhibitions and theatrical productions.
Altea boasts a Faculty of Fine Arts, part of the Miguel Hernández University of Elche.
Interestingly, in honor of the town, Seat named one of its sporty minivan models the Seat Altea.
The town’s name likely derives from the Greek Althaia, meaning “I heal,” or from the Arabic word aṭṭaláya (watchtower). During the Muslim period, Altea belonged to the Taifa of Denia until it was reconquered by Christian troops in 1244, under the command of James I of Aragon.
The 18th century in Altea was marked by agricultural, fishing, commercial, and demographic growth. During the 19th century, official and commercial life shifted to the town center by the sea.
Altea is distinguished from other towns on the Costa Blanca by its pebble beaches and narrow streets lined with white houses topped with tiled roofs, reminiscent of a snow-white Andalusian village.
Cobbled paths, located on the slopes of the Old Town, lead to the Catholic Church of Our Lady of Consolation, which has become a symbol of Altea. Its blue and white dome is often called the “Dome of the Mediterranean.”
The ruins of the 16th-century Bernia Fort. And the Bellaguarda and La Galera watchtowers (dating from the 16th and 17th centuries) have survived to this day.
Altea is home to the first Orthodox church built in Spain, the Church of the Archangel Saint Michael. It was built with money from parishioners living in Altea Hills, one of Altea’s most affluent residential areas. A third of the foreign residents here are Russian.
Furthermore, real estate in the town is primarily purchased by British, German, and Scandinavian buyers. Their choice is not surprising; peaceful and serene, Altea attracts those who value tranquility and privacy.
