The city’s history is found in the ruins of Guardamar Castle. In the 13th century, it served as a fortress that protected its inhabitants from Muslim attacks and was almost completely destroyed by an earthquake in the 19th century. Those who love antiquities will also be captivated by the ruins of the ancient Phoenician port of La Fonteta and the excavations of the Iberian settlement and necropolis of Cabezo Lucero, where, in 1987, a stone bust of an Iberian lady was found, dressed in clothing similar to the Lady of Elche, dating back to 450-350 BC. The Lady of Guardamar is considered one of the city’s symbols and is housed in the Archaeological Museum of Alicante.

Also of interest is the Francisco Mira House-Museum, dedicated to the engineer who saved the city from the encroaching dunes by planting thousands of pine, eucalyptus, cypress, and palm trees. These plantations, covering 800 hectares, form Alfonso XIII Park.
In the city center lies another park, Reina Sofía Park. Peacocks roam here, and you can feed the squirrels. Ducks and turtles inhabit the ponds. There is also a children’s playground and amusement rides.

At the mouth of the Segura River, there is a marina where outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy sailing, surfing, diving, and sport fishing.

In summer, tourists from various countries flock here. Foreigners make up 40% of the population.
